We waited for our Tesco delivery, and then moved across the cut to get a spot on the visitors moorings, to wait for our visitors, Len & Terry.....they just can't keep away!

They just can't keep away
After a really good nights sleep we went over to the water point here at Kilby and used the manual DIY pumpout station. This station uses a card but when we got to the box it was at pause. When we flicked the pause switch it burst into action so a free pumpout was on the cards.

The afternoon job was cleaning all the rubbish off the prop, and in the evening we all popped over the Navigation for another cheap meal!!!

"And our first time through Leicester"
Well we didn't get any sleep last night with the fenders creaking and groaning in the wind. So we set off at 8.15am and were lucky enough to get out of our spot when the wind dropped. As we approached Leicester the litter in the canal just got worse and we were picking our spots to pass through. It was a shame because the river itself was very pretty and had a lot of character.
We then passed the National Space Centre and Leicester City Football ground which looked very impressive and was another nice section.

We managed to do 13 miles and 16 locks with Derwent6 today, so we treated ourselves with a beer and curry in The Navigation for a fiver...
It was depressing because it seemed a safe City with lots of people walking around but it was just so destructive with the litter and graffiti everywhere. Every sign, chair, bin and bridge had writing on it. Leicester council needs to talk to Burton upon Trent council.
Anyway while we were going along we made up this little song after seeing 12 footballs in the canal, one of which we pulled out of a lock and threw to a guy having his lunch on a bench. He was very grateful and said he would give it to his son
Now sing it...
Now sing it...
It's our first time through Leicester and Derwent6 is here
with a floating barrel of beer.
12 footballs bobbing
11 bits of wood
10 shopping trolleys
9 plastic bottles
8 beer tins
7 rolls of white tape
6 burger cartons
5 dustbin liners
4 net curtains
3 kids toys
2 large coats
and a floating keg of beer

"It's a Blustery Day" said Pooh
Well the morning started with a haircut, before we set off with sun in our faces and the winds picking up slowly.
We continued along onto the River Soar and then passing a weir and going back onto the Leicester line of the Grand Union. We passed some lovely back gardens.
The whole canal seemed very river like and with the wind now very blustery it was a bit tricky in places. At one point we moored up for a lock and were pushed against the high alcoving (more paintwork) by a big weir and the wind behind it. We had to wait for another boat to be able to slide us round into the lock as we couldn't push off.

We are loving these river sections as the wildlife is fantastic. There is no towpath on some of these sections, but there is always a footpath not far away.
The wind had now got up to gale force and we were looking for a place to moor. We got to the Hope & Anchor and this was taken up by liveaboards who had obviously been on these mooring for a long time, some with the old trick of the "engine broken" notice stuck on the windows. We then tried to moor at the Waterpark moorings, but it was too shallow and we had to move on. We then got to Thurmaston lock and work was being carried out to the towpath and lock area with notices saying "Moorings temporarily closed during works".
My God we're going to be into Leicester at this rate!
The winds were now so bad we just had to moor up and there was just one space we thought we could get into, but with the wind we were a bit worried if Derwent6 was going to fit. It was between another boat and a bridge.
Well, we reversed back from the lock and angled the bow in, as we just slid sideways into the concrete wall, but we got in........ The fenders are only just doing their job on here, and we are being tossed around like a tin can in a bath.
We can't even close the side doors because the concrete is so high.
We then went for a walk around Watermede country park taking in some more wildlife.
With all this wind around lets hope we get some sleep tonight !!!!!

We're not racing today
We watched Jenson go to victory in the Grand Prix with lunch, and then checked the weather for the afternoon as it had got colder and cloudy during the day. It said we were going to get light rain from 4.00pm so we decided to stay put for the rest of the day.
We went for a circular walk which included watching a cricket match (and we don't even like cricket) and then went on to the railway museum and back along the towpath.

It was nice not moving. When we got back we just sat on the bow and relaxed. Oh, and by the way.....we never got that rain!

Proud.....Rolling Down the River
Well today's the day when we were to set off on the mighty river Trent.. we were excited and apprehensive at the same time. First we got out the Anchor and put it together (just in case).
We then travelled past Sawley Marina and then onto the first lock, which started to open as we approached as it was electrically operated. It seemed strange that we were both on board when going through a lock. The lock keeper came out to us and checked our licence and gave us some good information on the River Soar and Leicester section of the Grand Union.
We then made our way onto the River Soar and it was then we noticed how high the piling was when we had to do our next lock. It was difficult trying to hold Derwent6 away from the high concrete sides which were there to help when it floods. We caught the side a couple of times so more touching up required. The river was just fantastic and very scenic, we both loved it.
We then set off with the wind still picking up as we left. We went through, believe it or not, Derwent mouth lock and then saw the river in front of us. Yes, Derwent6 was at the mouth of the Derwent River.
You could see the current flow from right to left and we stuck the bow out and watched it pull us round luckily in the direction we wanted to go. Once we were in the flow we could back off the revs and let the current do the work.

What was strange was that Derwent6 felt lower in the water, it felt like the gas locker was taking on water. This was because the bow wasn't pointing into anything green like the banks or hillside, but just a massive expanse of water.
We then got to Loughbourgh and moored in the town. BW have done a good job on the basin and there were plenty of moorings.
It seemed weird going round the shops as we hadn't done it for a long time.
We had hit the town market right as well, as it was the end of the day and they were selling everything off at brilliant prices. After going round Sainsburys we headed back to Derwent6, and as it was Saturday night, and we were surrounded by bars and clubs, we decided to move on. We found a spot in the middle of nowhere and settled down for the night. What a great experience!!!

We got our cushions back!
We were expecting Julia from Fernwood, our boat builder, today as she was bringing our cushions back, so we thought we would do some cleaning. We are moored right under a willow tree and there were bits all over the roof, so while Del did the outside Al did the inside, as it should be.....
We spotted Shardlow marina and it also had a club house so thought we might as well check this out. We asked at the the bar and sure enough they had a singer on tonight, so as it is a short walk from Derwent6 that could be our best bet.
Our original plan was to travel down to Cavendish Bridge with Derwent6 and Blimey! we were glad we didn't take it down the River Trent to The Crown Inn pub. Not only was it flowing very fast, but there was no where to moor up, it just pays to have a little look around first.

We then walked past the church and into the village, it's a two mile walk to get to the post office, which is also a small stores. It seemed like a small shack in the middle of nowhere but it had everything we wanted. We checked out another two pubs and no entertainment so the marina it will have to be.
They had Chris Roger singing and we all had a great night. To prove it the night ended with Al sitting on the towpath singing"by the light of the silvery moon" and she wasn't very well....
Julia turned up at around 11.30am and brought the cushions which fitted lovely. We still have some snagging to be done by the lads, but that will now probably wait till the end of May.

We still haven't got our flyscreens made yet, but that is work in progress.
When Julia left we were going to move on, but the wind was so strong and we had to go on the river, so decided to stay put for the day. We thought we would go for a walk around Shardlow and walk down to Cavendish bridge and while we were at it get some more provisions. Just as we were leaving Pip & Roger from nb-windsong turned up, together with their son and his girlfriend, as they were visiting a marina in the area. Their boat is now looking like being finished for the beginning of June, boatbuilders pending! It was great to see you guys again and not long now!
We left soon after they had gone and walked to The Navigation, one of the seven pubs in the area. We were looking for some entertainment, being Friday night, but none there tonight, so we walked down towards Cavendish bridge.
Another handy thing to know is it's only a 30 minute bus ride to East Midland Airport if you ever need it.
We then walked back shopping in hand to Derwent6 and had some lunch and chilled for a bit.
After a shower it was off out to the club at the marina.
They had Chris Roger singing and we all had a great night. To prove it the night ended with Al sitting on the towpath singing"by the light of the silvery moon" and she wasn't very well....

Lock 'till you drop
We woke up to the milk train rumbling past at 4am......a reminder never to moor too close to the railway! When we surfaced properly, we awoke to beautiful sunshine, so it was up and off.
We left Findern and was soon upon the first of the double locks. These can be difficult, with heavy gates and sticky paddles, so no wonder all the hire boaters had glum faces......it's their baptism of fire! Talking of fire the best part of the day for Al was the local fire brigade conducting a canal rescue drill. They were looking at the risk of someone falling in at a lock so Al proved to be an expert in the subject!!!!!!
We carried on along this pretty canal, passing Swarkestone and Weston-on-Trent, before mooring up for a spot of lunch. This was just over the hill from Donnington Park raceway, so would be a good mooring on race day.
It was lovely sitting in the sunshine, and tough for us to get going again!!!! But get going we did, and made our way to Shardlow. We hadn't intended to stop, but it looked so inviting, and as there was one visitor mooring left, we decided to call it a day. We popped into the Clock Warehouse next to the lock for a quick pint, and as they were doing 2 main meals for £10, you know what we're like, we couldn't resist. Feeling stuffed, we went for a walk around the village, before chilling out for the rest of the evening.
